Following the resounding success of their debut release, The Lost Close and Leith independent bottler Fragrant Drops have reunited to unveil The Lost Close No. 2, an rare 25-year-old Single Grain Whisky distilled at Port Dundas Distillery – a historic Lowland distillery that was sadly demolished in 2011.
This second chapter in The Lost Close’s exclusive whisky series is a single cask release, drawn from a refill bourbon barrel and bottled at a robust 57.6% ABV. With only 190 bottles ever produced, this limited edition will be sold exclusively at The Lost Close in Edinburgh, priced at £100 per bottle.
On the nose, The Lost Close No. 2 opens with a delicate yet distinctive aroma of aniseed and vanilla extract, setting the stage for a dram that balances spice and sweetness in equal measure. The palate delivers an immediate peppery warmth, soon giving way to an unexpected sweetness - somewhere between the almond richness of marzipan and the playful fruitiness of Haribo gummies, depending on who you ask behind the bar. Despite its commanding 57.6% ABV, the finish is remarkably smooth and light, leaving a lingering impression of elegance and maturity that speaks to its 25 years in a refill bourbon barrel.
In 2024, The Lost Close launched its inaugural whisky, The Lost Close No. 1, a 29-year-old Single Grain from Strathclyde Distillery, in collaboration with Fragrant Drops. It quickly became a signature dram at The Lost Close and is now sold out.
Katie Scott, Head of Experiences and Events at The Lost Close, said: “The Lost Close No. 2 is now featuring in our Luxury Whisky Tasting, and the feedback has been phenomenal so far. It’s bold, distinctive, and adds a new layer to the experience we offer in our historic underground tasting room.”
Sara Kern, Assistant Manager at The Lost Close, adds: “I have personally found that single cask - single grain whiskies are ideal for highlighting cask complexity, and that is most definitely the case with The Lost Close No. 2. It’s an incredibly punchy dram, which makes sense considering it clocks in at a whopping 57.6% ABV, but with 25 years to mellow in the cask, its finish is nice and smooth.
